Emotional intelligence, A heart full of passion, Guides us through the storm

Emotional intelligence, A heart full of passion, Guides us through the storm

The truth is, your emotional intelligence is an extraordinary asset. This advantage lies in your ability to recognise and utilise your emotional responses to your benefit. By acknowledging your feelings rather than simply reacting to them, you unlock a powerful pathway to personal growth and resilience.

When someone utters a phrase like, "You make me so mad!" it exemplifies a common reflex reaction. We often blame our emotional responses on external stimuli, claiming that it's just the way we are or that we can't help how we feel. Yet, what if you paused for a moment? What if, instead of asserting that someone or something provokes your anger, you recognised that your emotional response is merely a reflection of your inner state?

This is where your emotional advantage begins!

By taking that brief moment to pause and reflect, you cultivate awareness. It's essential to acknowledge the sensation of the emotion itself - be it anger, frustration, or any other deep-seated feeling. You might ask yourself if that feeling serves you and what it signifies about your current situation.

For example, if you find yourself feeling irritated because a colleague continually interrupts your contributions during meetings, instead of letting that annoyance fester into resentment or retaliation, pause. Breathe. In this space, reflect on the emotion bubbling to the surface. Your irritation could signal that your input is not being valued, prompting you to articulate your needs more clearly.

Acknowledging that emotion creates the first shift towards harnessing your emotional intelligence. By reframing your perspective, you're not casting blame, but rather understanding the deeper meaning behind your feelings. Next, consider your options. Ask yourself: "What would I rather feel right now?" This simple question opens the door to alternative responses - whether it be assertively voicing your thoughts, initiating a private conversation with your colleague, or even choosing to let the moment pass without internalising the negativity.

This practice may require time and patience, but it will significantly reduce stress and enhance your overall well-being. You begin to realise that emotions provide valuable data about your experiences and behaviours.

They can be navigational tools guiding you through
your interactions and decisions!

Cultivating your emotional intelligence involves recognising patterns that lead to negative feelings. By doing so, you empower yourself to alter them proactively. Much like a skilled navigator adjusting their course based on winds or tides, you can change your emotional responses to live in greater harmony with yourself and others.

Remember, at any given moment, you have the power to pause, breathe, and respond differently. Embrace this opportunity! As you practise harnessing your emotional intelligence, you will not only find solace in your choices, but also contribute positively to your workplace and personal life.

Ultimately, your ability to manage emotions consciously is your most powerful tool. Your emotional intelligence is waiting to be unleashed, leading you to a life brimming with fulfilment, clarity, and empowerment.

Embrace it!

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
