Make your work meaningful, Find purpose in each task done, Joy in every breath

Make your work meaningful, Find purpose in each task done, Joy in every breath

Although job stability and a comfortable salary can seem appealing, the truth is that being content at work transcends basic financial needs. If you're yearning for deeper satisfaction and engagement, here's how to make your work meaningful.

First and foremost, it's essential to identify
your transferable skills!

Reflect on your past jobs and tasks - what activities energise you? What skills do you consistently employ? Create a comprehensive list detailing your competencies. This task is not only enlightening, but it can reveal patterns of skills that transfer across various roles and industries. When you delve into your capabilities, you begin to unearth a trove of options previously overlooked.

Once you've mapped out your skills, it's time to refocus on what you genuinely want to pursue. This doesn't mean limiting yourself to traditional job titles or sectors; instead, envision a role that honours the skills and qualities you wish to utilise. Perhaps now is an opportunity to enhance a particular skill you've neglected?

Don't shy away from letting go of tasks you no longer enjoy; identifying what you want to develop is integral to building a meaningful career. Recognise that your professional journey is just that - a journey. You have the freedom to carve a path that aligns with your current passions and interests.

Another pivotal step in your quest to make your work meaningful is to define what meaningful work looks like to you personally. Everyone has a unique set of values; what drives completion and satisfaction for one person may induce aversion in another. Therefore, take time to list your top work values, the aspects that resonate most profoundly with you. This could include creativity, independence, social impact, or even work-life balance.

Prioritising these core values will act as your
compass for future career choices!

With your transferable skills identified and a clear understanding of your core values, the next step is to explore industries and opportunities that align with them. Consider who in your network might offer insights. Engaging in informed discussions about these areas could be invaluable. Approach your connections with genuine curiosity about their experiences, rather than merely seeking a job offer.

Finally, as you strategise your next steps - whether crafting your CV, preparing for interviews, or exploring the job market - remember that the journey continues beyond initial transitions. You've set the foundation to make your work meaningful, but growth requires active engagement.

Remoulding your professional life into one that is meaningful is a rewarding undertaking. By identifying what skills you possess, clarifying your aspirations, and determining your work values, you'll set yourself on a fulfilling career path that resonates with your true self.

It's never too late to redefine your work and embrace what you love! So, embark on this journey today and uncover how to make your work meaningful.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
