Questions that can transform your career. What do you truly desire? Who do you want to be?

Questions that can transform your career. What do you truly desire? Who do you want to be?

From time to time, it is essential to pause and reflect on your journey, so addressing the right questions can pave the way to a more fulfilled and purpose-driven professional life. Here are five key questions that I believe can transform your career and help you on this profound journey.

  1. What would I rather have? This fundamental question invites you to examine your current discontentment. When you experience feelings of dissatisfaction, take a moment to ask yourself what you'd really like instead. It might be a role that allows more creativity, better work-life balance, or perhaps a more collaborative environment. List at least three options and prioritise them. Once you've determined what you would rather have, take actionable steps towards that preference.
  2. What would I rather feel? Your emotional state is a compass guiding you through your career path. Recognise how you feel - whether it be stressed, unfulfilled, or anxious - acknowledge that emotion, and consider your next move. You can choose to change your feelings by actively engaging in activities that bring you joy and uplift you. Think about how you want to feel and take steps to cultivate those emotions within your work environment.
  3. Is what I'm doing now moving me towards or away from my objective? It's critical to periodically assess your daily tasks. Are they aligned with your long-term career goals? If you find that what you're currently engaged in isn't propelling you forward, reconsider your priorities. Delegate or eliminate unproductive activities and focus on more meaningful tasks that inch you closer to your aspirations.
  4. Am I using the skills and qualities I enjoy? Regularly evaluate if you are employing the skills that bring you joy and satisfaction. If your day-to-day tasks seem to neglect your strengths or passions, it may be time to initiate change. Seek opportunities that allow you to utilise those prized skills more effectively, whether through a new project or requesting changes in your current role.
  5. Are my career values being met in the way I want them to be? A strong alignment between your career activities and your personal values leads to true satisfaction. Regularly check in with yourself to ascertain whether your work reflects what you truly stand for. If your answer is “no” or “not quite”, recognise that this is a key trigger for taking decisive action. You deserve a career that resonates with your values, paving the way for long-lasting happiness.

Regularly asking yourself these five questions can transform your career, as it gives you the chance to reflect on your professional trajectory. By choosing to engage with these inquiries, you create a pathway toward a more fulfilling, aligned career, enhancing not only your professional satisfaction but also your overall well-being.

Remember, the power lies in your hands to steer your career in the direction you truly desire.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
