The power of language is profound in shaping your feelings and experiences. By altering how you communicate, particularly with yourself, you can dramatically improve your mood and overall outlook. Here are some practical strategies for mindful language ...

Improve your mood now, Nature's beauty all around, Serenity found

Words possess immense power. The phrases you choose in conversations, both with others and yourself, can significantly influence your emotions and overall well-being. By learning how to improve your language, you can genuinely enhance your mood and experience life in a more positive light.

Too often, we find ourselves dwelling on negative phrases
and focusing on what's wrong in our lives!

Recognising this pattern is your first step towards change. When you catch yourself in a moment of negative self-talk - perhaps saying something like, "I can't handle this" - then pause. This is an opportunity to reframe your thoughts. The shift to more positive language can create ripples of change in your emotional state.

Consider the phrase, "I was made redundant". This expression implies a personal failure, suggesting a diminishment of self-worth. Instead, try saying, "My role was made redundant". This subtle shift not only separates you from the negative connotation but opens a pathway to discussing your strengths and future prospects.

Such small adjustments can dramatically improve your mood by promoting self-empowerment instead of self-deprecation.

How you express your feelings is crucial. For instance, saying, "You make me so mad", places blame on others for your own emotional responses. Instead, adopt the phrase similar to, "I feel angry because …" as this way, you own your emotions without passing the responsibility on to someone else.

Create space to manage your reactions and grant yourself
the power to improve your mood rather than be at the mercy of
external factors!

Another common phrase is, "I can't do that". This finality shuts down possibilities. Instead, consider adding the word 'yet' to your vocabulary. By saying, "I can't do that yet", you maintain the belief in your potential to learn and grow. This mindset invites optimism, encouraging you to explore, strive, and ultimately improve your mood.

While negative self-talk can haunt you, moments of self-judgment can be transformed. Phrases such as "I'm so clumsy" are detrimental. Respond by acknowledging the incident without defining your identity. Say instead, "Whoops! I'll be more careful next time!" This reframing enables you to detach from a harmful self-image and boosts your self-esteem over time.

Mindfully choosing your words is a powerful practice that
can significantly improve your mood!

The simplest changes in how you communicate with yourself can lead to remarkably improved emotional resilience and happiness. Listen to your inner dialogue and catch yourself when you slip into negativity.

Congratulate yourself for noticing, and then rephrase those thoughts into something constructive. Embrace the journey of using language to enhance your life.By altering your words, you can shape your experiences and ultimately improve your mood.

So, what will you rephrase today?

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
