The difference between goals and intentions: why both matter for your career

The difference between goals and intentions is simpler than it sounds: goals tell you where you want to get to, while intentions shape how you show up along the way. When you use both together, your personal growth feels clearer, calmer, and more achievable ...

Discover the importance of understanding the difference between goals and intentions for a successful career

Discover the importance of understanding the difference between goals and intentions for a successful career

You can think of the difference between goals and intentions as the difference between direction and behaviour. A goal gives your career a destination, whether that is a promotion, a new role, or a complete change of field. An intention shapes your presence in the moment, clarifying who you want to be and how you want to act today.

When job hunting, changing careers, or trying to advance, goals
are useful because they help measure progress!

They can be short-term, such as updating your CV by Friday, or long-term, such as moving into a leadership role within three years. They can also be personal, such as feeling more confident at work, or professional, such as earning a qualification that strengthens your expertise.

The point is that goals give you structure, and structure matters when you are building life goals that lead somewhere.

At the same time, the difference between goals and intentions matters because a goal without an intention can become a box-ticking exercise. You may know what you want, yet still feel scattered or inconsistent.

That is where setting intentions creates a useful mindset shift. Instead of asking only, “What do I want?”, you also ask, “How do I want to show up while I work towards it?” That question can change your personal growth in a very practical way.

If your goal is to get promoted, your intention might be to speak clearly, stay calm under pressure, and be generous with your ideas. If your goal is to move into a different industry, your intention might be to stay curious, remain resilient, and ask better questions.

The difference between goals and intentions becomes clearer when you recognise that goals point to outcomes, while intentions shape your daily behaviour. That is why both personal and professional goals work best when they align with the person you are choosing to become.

You do not need to wait for a Monday morning to begin!

You can set intentions for today, this week, next year, or even the next conversation you have. That might mean deciding to listen more carefully, be less defensive, or project more confidence in your body language. These small choices build daily motivation by giving you something you can control right now, even when the bigger plan still feels a little distant.

You may also find that intentions help when progress towards goals feels slow. Career progress is rarely neat, and there will be times when you are doing the right things without seeing immediate results.

Your goal keeps you committed to the destination, but your intention keeps you grounded in the process. That combination often makes the difference between giving up and growing well.

You will make better decisions when your
goals and intentions align!

The goal tells you what success looks like, while the intention tells you what kind of professional you want to be as you get there. When that alignment is in place, your personal growth feels less like pressure and more like purpose.

And really, the difference between goals and intentions is what helps you turn ambition into steady, credible progress.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
