LinkedIn is more than just a recruitment website. It's a vital tool for advancing your career and professional growth

LinkedIn is more than just a recruitment website. It's a vital tool for advancing your career and professional growth

Many people associate LinkedIn with job hunting, but that is not really the point of the platform. Its real strength is professional networking, which means you can use it to build a network that helps you think, learn and move forward with more purpose.

If employed, LinkedIn helps connect with people who
expand your view of work beyond your current role!

Those connections can support your career growth by helping you research future options, understand which skills matter, and identify the steps you may need to take next. They also give you a way to stay aware of wider industry conversations so you can bring useful ideas back to your team or organisation.

If you are changing direction, LinkedIn becomes even more valuable, as you can use it to test ideas before you commit.

You can follow people in roles that interest you, see what they discuss, and begin to understand the realities behind the job title. That makes job-search LinkedIn activity far more strategic, because you are not only looking for vacancies, but also gathering evidence.

If you are considering self-employment, LinkedIn can serve
as both a practical research tool and a visibility tool!

You can study your market, connect with people in your field, identify suppliers, and start conversations with potential clients. That kind of professional networking is often what turns a rough idea into something workable.

You can also use LinkedIn in different ways, depending on where you are in your career. For some, it is a shop window that showcases what they do and what they stand for. For others, it is a place to share expertise and build credibility as a voice worth listening to.

And for many, it is simply the most efficient way to build a strong professional network without waiting for chance meetings to do the work.

You will get far more from it if you treat your profile as an active career tool rather than a static CV. Good LinkedIn profile tips usually come back to the same idea: be clear about what you do, demonstrate your value, and make it easy for the right people to see why they should connect with you.

You do not need to spend hours on it every day, but you do need to use LinkedIn with intention. If you approach it as a place to learn, connect and position yourself, it becomes much more than a job board.

In the end, LinkedIn is essential because it helps you build relationships and gain the insight that makes your next move smarter.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
