Mentors and goal buddies can make your ambitions clearer and more achievable. You get advice, perspective and accountability, and you stay on track when motivation dips. A good career support network can change everything ...

Discover the power of mentors and goal buddies in achieving your aspirations and unlocking your full potential

Discover the power of mentors and goal buddies in achieving your aspirations and unlocking your full potential

You can have all the talent in the world and still feel stuck if you are trying to figure everything out alone. That is why mentors and goal buddies can be such a powerful part of your progress. When you are setting goals, it helps to have someone who can challenge your thinking without judging you.

A mentor gives you perspective, experience and sometimes
the kind of honesty you need to hear!

However, a 'goal buddy' may be more informal, but they give you momentum because you both agree to check in, stay focused and keep each other moving. That mix of insight and accountability often turns vague intentions into real action.

A mentor within your organisation can be especially useful if you want to understand how things really work. They may help you decode office politics, spot opportunities for promotion, and build the confidence to speak up.

If you are trying to increase your visibility or learn how decisions are made, an internal business mentor can be a shortcut to understanding the culture and the unwritten rules.

A mentor outside your organisation, but in the same profession, can offer a different kind of value. They are less influenced by your internal environment, so they may provide more direct feedback and broader career insight.

They can help you compare your current path with what is normal or possible elsewhere, which is useful when you are considering progression, a move, or strengthening your professional identity. In that sense, mentors and goal buddies can help you see both the small steps and the bigger picture.

If your mentor is entirely outside both your organisation and
your profession, you gain something else: distance!

Someone from a different field may notice patterns you cannot see because you are too close to the work. They might help you improve your decision-making, confidence, productivity habits or resilience without getting bogged down in technical detail.

Sometimes the most useful advice comes from someone who understands how people work, even if they do not know your industry.

Yes, a more informal goal buddy may be what you need? They are there to help you stay honest with yourself. You say what you plan to do, they ask what happened, and then you do the same for them. That simple structure can improve accountability, keep your goals visible and make personal development feel less lonely. It also works well when your energy dips, because you are less likely to abandon a plan that someone else is tracking with you.

This is where professional support can
make a real difference too!

A career coach (such as myself), who is a member of The CDI and a UK Registered Career Development Professional, brings trained, ethical, and evidence-based support to your career thinking.

You are not just getting encouragement; you are getting someone who understands career development, goal setting, confidence, change and decision-making, and who can help you navigate them in a structured way.

That matters whether you are starting out, aiming for promotion or seeking a complete change in direction.

Whether it's a mentor or a goal buddy, the right support does not do the work for you; it makes the work clearer, more focused, and far more sustainable. When you combine mentors and goal buddies with thoughtful career coaching, you give yourself a much better chance of turning intention into progress.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
