If you want networking to genuinely help your career, focus on questions to ask at a networking meeting that uncover real entry points, the skills employers value, and honest day-to-day insights. You'll leave with better direction, stronger contacts, and more confidence about your next move ...

Get the most out of your networking meeting by preparing smart questions to ask and make meaningful connections

Get the most out of your networking meeting by preparing smart questions to ask and make meaningful connections

You do not need to sound polished or impressive. In fact, the best networking conversation starters are usually those that get people talking about their own experience, because that is where the useful detail lies.

Asking thoughtful questions helps you understand what a job
really involves and whether it fits what you want!

One of the strongest business networking tips is to lead with curiosity rather than pressure. You are not trying to secure a job offer in ten minutes. You are trying to learn how people got to where they are, what mattered along the way, and what you should pay attention to next.

That is why the questions you ask at a networking meeting matter so much: they help you move from vague interest to clear action.

You might ask how someone came to be in their role, or what their career path looked like before they arrived there. That gives you a realistic view of the different routes into an industry and often reveals paths you had not even considered. Sometimes people took the direct route; sometimes they arrived by accident; sometimes they built experience in a completely different area first. All of that is useful.

It also helps to ask what they enjoy about
the role and what frustrates them!

People often talk more openly when you invite honesty, giving you a much clearer picture of day-to-day reality. A job can look brilliant from the outside, but the practical demands, pace, or pressure may be very different from what you expect. This kind of professional networking advice saves you time and helps you avoid decisions based on guesswork.

You should also ask what a typical day is like. That one question can tell you far more than a job title ever will.

It shows you what the work actually feels like, what takes up time, and where the role sits within the wider organisation. If you are trying to picture yourself in that environment, this is one of the most useful questions to ask at a networking meeting.

Another valuable area is skills and entry routes!

You can ask what qualifications or training they value most, what tasks a young person or newcomer might be expected to handle, and which qualities stand out when they are recruiting. That gives you a clearer sense of what to build now, whether that means experience, confidence, technical knowledge, or simply the ability to show up reliably and learn quickly.

Do not forget to ask who else they think you should speak to. If someone points you towards another person, a team, or even a professional body, your research becomes much more focused and less random.

When you ask questions well at a networking meeting, you are not just gathering information; you are testing assumptions, comparing options, and building a clearer picture of what suits you.

And that is why asking the right questions at a networking meeting can make such a difference to your next steps.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
