Blowing your own career trumpet is essential for career advancement. Many hesitate due to upbringing, but utilising strategic frameworks can make this process comfortable and effective ...

Career trumpet sounds, Melodies of success play, Music of the soul

Career trumpet sounds, Melodies of success play, Music of the soul

Self-promotion is often viewed with disdain, perceived as shameless bragging. As children, many of us learned to sidestep boasting with phrases like, "Don't blow your own trumpet" repeated by caring yet misguided parents, because that's what their parents told them.

While the intention behind this advice is rooted in love, the harsh reality of today’s competitive job market begs to differ. If you're serious about advancing your career, it’s time to embrace the art of self-promotion and confidently blow your own career trumpet.

Why do we shy away from highlighting
our achievements?

Often, it’s an ingrained belief that this behaviour is self-serving or that others may perceive it negatively. However, understanding how to effectively showcase your skills can significantly enhance your career trajectory. It’s not just about being vocal; it’s about strategically communicating your worth.

The WHO Model ™ (What/How/Outcomes) and STAR Model (Situation/Task/Actions/Results) are valuable frameworks that enable you to present your accomplishments in a structured manner. These approaches help you articulate your contributions without sounding boastful. For instance, rather than merely saying, “I led a successful project,” you could say, “I managed a team of six, implementing a new project that increased sales by 20% within six months.” This method shifts the focus from boasting about your abilities to showcasing your impact.

Refining your self-promotion doesn’t just serve to flaunt your successes; it can lead to tangible benefits. When you blow your own career trumpet, you’ll likely experience improved performance appraisals and increased visibility in job interviews. Employers are not just looking for qualifications; they want to see confidence and a proven track record. When you articulate your accomplishments with clarity, you demonstrate not only your value, but also your capability to reflect on your experiences critically.

Blowing your own career trumpet can foster
greater self-confidence!

Many individuals struggle with impostor syndrome, the feeling of being a fraud despite evidence to the contrary. By learning how to highlight your achievements effectively, you can combat these feelings and internalise your worth. This self-assuredness will, in turn, resonate with potential employers, making it more likely that they will offer you an interview.

Ultimately, blowing your own career trumpet is a necessary skill in the modern workplace. It’s crucial to navigate this terrain with authenticity and self-awareness. Remember, the aim isn’t to overshadow others or create an inflated sense of self-importance; it’s about celebrating your unique contributions and paving the way for new opportunities.

So, the next time you find yourself hesitating to share your accomplishments, pause and reflect on the potential impact. Embrace the challenge and step into your potential; it’s time to blow your own career trumpet proudly.

By doing so, you equip yourself with the tools needed not only for career advancement, but for fostering trust in your abilities, leading you to a brighter professional future.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
