Get more interviews, Opportunity awaits, Open doors to success
Communicating effectively through your CV and LinkedIn profile is essential if you want to get more interviews. The way you present your skills and experiences can influence how potential employers perceive you, ultimately determining how many job offers you secure.
Here are three vital language tips that can significantly enhance your application success.
Reframe Redundancy - One significant mindset shift is in the way you talk about redundancy. If you've recently lost your job, it's tempting to say, “I was made redundant!” This phrasing can unintentionally present you as a victim of circumstance. Instead, say, “My position was made redundant.” This subtle shift not only focuses on the job rather than your worth as a professional, but also shows that you are aware of the situation's broader context. By reframing the narrative, you empower yourself, which translates into confidence in your applications and interviews—key factors that will help you get more interviews.
Assertive Language Matters- Your CV and LinkedIn might mention your abilities, but if they are framed as 'ability to' statements, you are missing an opportunity to showcase your experience convincingly. Instead of writing, “Ability to manage teams of up to six people,” change it to “Managed and motivated teams of up to six people.” This wording demonstrates that you not only have the capability, but have successfully executed these responsibilities. When potential employers read your accomplishments, they can envision you in action, making you a more attractive candidate and helping you to get more interviews.
Go Beyond Responsibility -It's crucial to differentiate between being responsible for a task and actively participating in it. When you state, “Responsible for project management,” it sounds passive. Transform that statement into “Successfully managed multiple projects from inception to completion.” By clearly articulating what you have achieved, you provide tangible evidence of your capabilities - making it easier for recruiters to envisage you fulfilling a similar role in their organisation. These assertive phrases resonate more strongly and could significantly improve your chances of getting more interviews.
Mind your language, and it can be the difference between being overlooked and highlighted in the job market. With a focus on empowering phrases, demonstrating your actual experience rather than merely stating abilities or responsibilities, you'll position yourself as a proactive and capable professional.
If you're serious about advancing your career and want to get more interviews, start refining the language in your applications today. A few strategic changes can lead to greater opportunities and success in your job search.
Take charge of your narrative, and watch as the doors to potential interviews open wide.

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.
It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.
My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.
