Discover the secrets to boosting your career by learning how to get more done in less time

When colleagues and managers see someone who is organised, reliable and able to achieve results without constantly feeling overwhelmed, they naturally come to trust that person with greater responsibility.

One of the simplest ways to improve productivity
is to prioritise your tasks!

At the start of each day, identify the two or three things that will make the biggest difference if you complete them. It's easy to get distracted by emails, meetings and small tasks that create the illusion of progress, but tackling your most important work first helps you make meaningful progress before your energy starts to dip.

Another powerful habit is to minimise distractions. Constantly switching between tasks, checking notifications every few minutes, or responding to every email as soon as it arrives can significantly reduce your concentration.

Try working in focused blocks of time with your phone on silent and your inbox closed. You'll often complete tasks more quickly and produce higher-quality work.

Don't underestimate the value of planning ahead. Spending just ten minutes at the end of each day to prepare tomorrow's priorities can help you start the next day with clear direction, rather than wondering where to begin. This small habit also reduces stress because you're no longer carrying tomorrow's to-do list around in your head overnight.

Learning to say no is another important skill!

Taking on every request may seem helpful, but it can leave you struggling to fulfil your own responsibilities. Managing expectations professionally demonstrates sound judgement and helps protect the time you need for your most valuable work.

Technology can also be your best productivity partner. Calendar reminders, task management apps, note-taking tools and automation can all reduce repetitive work and help you stay organised. The goal isn't to use every productivity app available, but to find a simple system that works for you and stick to it.

Finally, remember that consistency beats intensity!

You don't need one extraordinary week to transform your career. Small, daily improvements gradually build better habits, stronger performance, and greater confidence. Over time, managers notice those who consistently deliver, meet deadlines, stay organised, and remain calm under pressure.

Whether you're hoping to secure your first role, earn a promotion, or move into a completely different career, developing effective productivity habits can help you stand out for the right reasons.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
