Unlike many financial investments, the returns often compound over time, opening doors to better opportunities, higher earnings and, just as importantly, greater job satisfaction. The question is whether you're investing deliberately or simply hoping things will work out.

Here are six career investments that
I believe are worth making!

Start by regularly reviewing your values and strengths. Careers evolve, as do we. The role that suited you five years ago may no longer be the right fit today. Taking time every few months to reflect on what motivates you, what you're naturally good at, and what gives you energy can help you make career decisions that feel right rather than simply convenient. Knowing yourself is often the foundation of making better career choices.

Next, give your mindset an MOT. It's easy to develop limiting beliefs after a redundancy, a difficult manager or an unsuccessful interview. We all tell ourselves stories, but they're not always true. Challenge assumptions such as "I'm too old", "I'm not experienced enough" or "Nobody will hire me". A healthier mindset won't magically create opportunities, but it will help you recognise and pursue them with greater confidence.

Your professional network is another investment that pays dividends over time. The best networks aren't built when you need a job; they're built long before then. Stay in touch with former colleagues, attend networking events, comment thoughtfully on LinkedIn, and be generous with your own support. Relationships built on genuine interest and mutual respect often lead to opportunities you'd never find through job adverts alone.

It's equally important to manage your boundaries. Career success shouldn't come at the expense of your wellbeing. Learning when to say no, protecting your time and avoiding constant overwork help you perform consistently over the long term. Burnout rarely benefits anyone, and maintaining a healthy balance makes you more resilient when challenges inevitably arise.

Don't underestimate the value of switching off. Spending time with family and friends, pursuing hobbies, exercising, or simply doing something you enjoy isn't wasted time - it's an investment in your creativity, resilience, and mental wellbeing. Some of our best ideas appear when we're not actively looking for them.

Finally, consider investing in professional support. A career coach such as myself won't make decisions for you, but they can help you see opportunities you may have overlooked, challenge your thinking and provide accountability as you move forward. I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map. It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.
