Audit your mindset: are your thoughts helping or holding you back?

We often spend time reviewing our careers, finances and personal goals, but how often do we stop to audit our mindset? The way we think about ourselves and the situations we face can have a powerful influence on our confidence, decisions and overall wellbeing ...

Audit your mindset: are your thoughts helping you move forward or holding you back?

Audit your mindset: are your thoughts helping you move forward or holding you back?

Our minds are always interpreting what happens around us. Sometimes, those interpretations are helpful, encouraging us to take action and embrace opportunities. At other times, they can create unnecessary pressure, especially when we let limiting beliefs or negative assumptions shape our thinking.

We must recognise our own limiting beliefs!

Limiting beliefs are the assumptions we make about ourselves that can keep us from moving forward. Thoughts such as "I'm not experienced enough", "I'm too old to change careers" or "I'll never be good at that" can slowly become barriers to progress.

The interesting thing is that these beliefs aren't necessarily facts. They're often stories we've formed from past experiences, disappointments, or things other people have told us. By questioning them, we can begin to see possibilities we may have dismissed before.

I believe much of the stress we experience comes not just from what's happening, but from the story we're telling ourselves about it.

Imagine being invited to an unexpected meeting with your manager. One person might immediately assume something is wrong, while another sees it as an ordinary conversation. The situation is identical, but their interpretations create very different emotional responses.

Of course, some situations are genuinely stressful, regardless of our mindset. However, recognising when our assumptions are adding to that stress can help us respond more calmly and constructively.

Let's make time for a mindset audit!

Auditing your mindset doesn't require hours of reflection. Start by noticing your reactions when something challenges you. Are you assuming the worst? Are you dismissing opportunities before exploring them? Are you being more critical of yourself than you would be of someone else?

Try replacing automatic negative thoughts with more balanced questions. Instead of "What if I fail?", consider "What could I learn?" Rather than "I can't do this", ask yourself, "What support or skills would help me?"

Small changes in perspective can gradually
build confidence and resilience!

Your mindset isn't fixed, and neither is your future. Taking time to question your beliefs, challenge unhelpful assumptions and recognise your strengths can open doors you didn't realise were there.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn't the situation we're facing, but the story we've convinced ourselves is true.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
