If you're considering your next career move, it's natural to wonder what employers are really looking for. While specific technical skills vary across industries, labour market information consistently shows that employers place a high value on a core set of transferable skills applicable to almost any role ...

What skills do employers value in 2026? This is a question that many job seekers are asking!

What skills do employers value in 2026? This is a question that many job seekers are asking!

Communication remains one of the most sought-after skills in the job market. Employers want people who can explain ideas clearly, listen effectively, build relationships and work well with colleagues, customers and stakeholders. Alongside communication, skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, decision-making and adaptability continue to feature prominently in employer surveys and recruitment data.

As technology and AI reshape the workplace, these human
skills are becoming even more important!

Critical thinking is another skill that employers increasingly value. In a world where information is readily available, organisations need people who can assess situations, evaluate evidence and make sound judgements. The ability to analyse problems, identify solutions and take appropriate action can set you apart from other candidates.

Digital skills are also increasingly important across a wide range of sectors. You don't need to work in technology to benefit from being comfortable with digital tools, online collaboration platforms and emerging technologies. Employers are looking for people who can learn new systems quickly and adapt as workplaces evolve.

There's a lesser-known category of skills with a big impact on success: career management skills. Often, those who make the most satisfying career moves aren't the most technically skilled but understand themselves and manage their careers proactively.

This starts with understanding your own
strengths, skills and values!

When you know what you're good at and what matters most to you, you're in a much stronger position to make informed career decisions. Goal-setting is equally important. A clear sense of direction helps you focus your energy and identify opportunities that move you closer to where you want to be.

Networking is another valuable skill that many people overlook. Building and maintaining professional relationships can help you learn about opportunities, gain insights, and access support throughout your career.

Combined with emotional intelligence - understanding both your own emotions and those of others - networking can help you build stronger professional relationships and navigate workplace challenges more effectively.

The good news is that these skills can all be developed. By investing time in your employability and career management skills, you'll be better equipped not only to secure opportunities but also to build a successful, fulfilling career.

One that is aligned with who you are.

Until next time ...

About Dave Cordle ...

Dave Cordle

I began my professional life training as a cartographer with the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, a department of the British government. I made maps of places such as Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Sudan and the British Virgin Islands. It was a fascinating time, being involved in planning the flights for aerial photography, interpreting the photographs and eventually producing the plates for the different layers of the final map.

It was during my latter years as a cartographer and my career in computing that I undertook bigger mountaineering expeditions to the Andes, the Himalayas, the Tien Shan and the Caucasus. At that time I also held various leadership roles in scouting. I coached and trained young people successfully leading them to develop themselves and embrace new experiences. So that’s where my passion comes from to help young people learn the strategies for success that I share with my business and career clients.

My journey in personal professional development and coaching has been amazing, and will continue to be so: it’s why I’m here, it’s my big passion. It’s what has informed my vision and mission.

However unlikely your dream might seem, if you keep taking steps towards it, even small steps, you may well just surprise yourself.
